one thing that doesn't make sense to me is this part:

Witnesses told the NBC News affiliate in Charleston, W. Wa., that shoppers walked around and even over Vances body.

Ok, so did these "witnesses" help Vance? Or did they stand there and "witness" the people walking around the body? It's not clear to me.

I would like to know how the story came to the attention of this TV station. Did something really out of the ordinary happen with this man, and someone called the station to report it, or are TV stations everywhere scouring hospitals and police reports for Black Friday stories?

For example the co-worker that is quoted as deploring the lack of Good Samaratinism, did she actually witness the event, or did the TV reporter stick a microphone in her face, give her a hyped-up version of what happened, and ask her to comment on it?
