This is not the only, or even first, time something like this has happened.

This kind of thing was downright commonplace back in the early days of the AIDS epidemic, when relatives who had not been heard from for years routinely showed up the moment someone became sick or died and kicked his partner out on the streets and took all their possessions.

So no, marriage equality is not a pony, a pet issue, or even a fabulous pink pony, to quote someone whose tombstone was five years overdue. It is a basic human right of which too many people are still deprived.
