Daniel Melnick, one of Hollywood's most respected producers and studio chiefs, has died aged 77.

Melnick, who worked with some of the industry's biggest stars, produced gutsy, intelligent films that included Straw Dogs, Network and Midnight Express.

He died at his home in Los Angeles last week after suffering multiple ailments, his family said on Sunday. He had recently undergone surgery for lung cancer.

Melnick was head of production at the MGM and Columbia studios, where he helped develop the divorce drama Kramer vs. Kramer and the nuclear suspense thriller The China Syndrome.

He also worked in television and produced the 1960s spy-spoof series Get Smart that starred Don Adams as bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart.
