81. I see several things
ONE: this is Europe's way of saying "yes, we rejected the Olympic Bid, but we did not reject Obama." This is a very plain, clear way to say that while the rest of the world is still distrustful of Yanks, they are willing to give Obama a chance. They are also aware that the Right used the olympic bid to slam Obama, and this is their way of giving Fox News something to choke on.

TWO: This was the payoff for getting rid of the Missile Shield. It is not as good as ending the Mideast wars, not by a long shot, but it DID avert the reheating of the Cold War, which is the VERY LAST THING the world needed.

THREE: As Israel is SO wanting the war with iran, this is a way to choke them. Let's face facts, the right wing is ramping up for an Iranian war, and if the Other fellow in in November, the USA and Israel would be proceeding to bomb Iran in a mess that would look Iraq AND Afghanistan look like Afternoon Tea at the Ritz-Carlton. That conflict could have become the Third World War, and could still be if saner heads do not win.

FOUR: this is incentive. If Obama ramps down from the wars, he can look extra saintly, plus it makes it hard for him to backtrack and listen to Rahm. This is bait for him to NOT be LBJ.

Of course, it does not matter one bit what the world thinks, sad to say. We as Americans cannot, and should not, be satisfied with anything less than the end of these wars, as well as a slowdown of the Military industrial complex that has cost us so damned much. Of course, just because I can hold Obama to account does not mean I do not realize, for all his faults, that the alternative really is a LOT worse. A GOP victory in 2012 could show us how much worse.
