Vice President Years in office Year left office Reason and Result
Hannibal Hamlin
Abraham Lincoln and Hamlin had little interaction
throughout the Civil War. Hamlin was replaced
on Lincoln's Republican ticket with Democrat Andrew
Johnson prior to the election of 1864. Johnson became
Vice President, and assumed the Presidency
upon the assassination of Lincoln in 1865.
Garret Hobart
Died in 1899
Upon Hobart's untimely death, his spot as Vice President
on the Presidential ticket was assumed by
Theodore Roosevelt in 1900. President William
McKinley was assassinated in his second term in 1901,
and Roosevelt assumed the Presidency.
Henry Wallace
Franklin Roosevelt dropped his friend Wallace
from the ticket in 1944. Roosevelt choose
Harry Truman as his Vice Presidential running
mate. Truman assumed the Presidency upon
Roosevelt's death in 1945.
Spiro Agnew
Agnew was elected to two terms. When a scandal
emerged about his past business practices, Agnew
resigned the Vice Presidency. President Richard Nixon
selected Congressman Gerald Ford to replace him.
Ford became President when Nixon resigned in 1974.
