And yes, King David sent him off to the front lines where he would almost certainly die in battle, and he did. Before that he had brought Uriah back home from the war to visit with his wife, so that if she became pregnant they could claim it was Uriah's offspring. But Uriah would not sleep with Bathsheba, because he felt it wrong to take his ease and be with his wife while his brothers were off fighting in the war. So that forced David to send him back to the front lines.

The son that resulted from David and Bathsheba's union died as an infant. Solomon came along later.
