Even those that did not like Sharon, they saw him as a strong leader that would never compromise Israel's security for the sake of any peace deal. Sharon's opponents on the right hated him for precisely the same reason, they feared that Sharon could make a deal and make it stick forever damning their dreams of a Greater Israel.

Just look at US politics in the aftermath of 9/11! People want someone that they feel will protect them. The GOP succeeded in portraying Kerry as weak on defense, even though the facts were otherwise, and many people voted for Commander-in-Chief Bush because they wanted a Fuehrer that would make them feel safe.

Peretz is not seen as such a leader.
