3. That bolsters my working theory
Miss Miers is Dubya's "Oh yeah? Well, uhm, up yours!" response to the charges of cronyism when he had to drop Brownie from FEMA. Dubya don't tolerate mistakes -- that is, he doesn't tolerate it when other people point out HIS mistakes.

Like a petulant teen-ager, when folks pointed out how unqualified Michael Brown was to run FEMA, he reacted with a Supreme Court nomination that said, in effect, "You want to see cronyism and unqualified candidates? Well get a load of this!" I'm sure it bugged him that initially some of his staunchest supporters didn't think too much of Miss Miers, but in the intervening weeks, he and his henchmen have had a chance to work over the opposition in his base, and you see them falling in line, one by one. Falwell, Dobson, and others who march in lockstep, saying now that they "trust" the president to make the right decision.

Of course, some of them made intemperate comments about secret briefings and recalling past conversations. But by the time Miss Miers comes up for her confirmation hearing, all of these misstatements, whether by Dobson or the Texas judges, will have been "forgotten," and the Republicans will once again yell themselves hoarse in support of the Dim Son so that he doesn't wish them into the cornfield.
