Baghdad blasts expose Iraq's security crisis

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Three blasts in and around Baghdad killed one American soldier and wounded six others, highlighting anew the critical security situation facing US-led coalition forces occupying Iraq (news - web sites).

The flurry of assaults, which the Americans say are growing in their sophistication, coincided with the first day of a Baath party double anniversary, as US troops caught up in the assaults expressed grave concern over being "walking ducks" unable to mount effective counter-attacks.

"Soldiers are more concerned now because people they know are getting hurt," Colonel Dyfierd Harris told AFP minutes after assuming command of the First Armoured Division's Fourth Brigade, based at Baghdad international airport.

"It's a dangerous environment, yes. And as people get hurt, people get nervous."
