McCain is finished as a national figure in GOP politics. The conservatives will never forget his "betrayal" in the recent filibuster fiasco. But he didn't seriously have a chance, anyway.

My prediction for GOP nominee: Cheney will be drafted and accept. He will then proceed to crush Hillary in 2008. Very hypothetical: he will serve 2 years, then resign for health reasons leaving his very conservative vice-president in charge. Said vice-president will then run for 2 terms of his own.

So, for me, it all boils down to this: we must win in 2006, and run a viable (read centrist, Leiberman centrist) candidate in 2008. Anything else is a recipe for Democratic disaster for the foreseeable future. x(
