Town segregates sex offenders

HAMILTON, N.J. - This township last night became the first municipality in New Jersey or Pennsylvania to prohibit registered sex offenders from moving within 2,500 feet - nearly a half-mile - of any school, playground, park or day-care center.

The ban will make most of Hamilton Township off-limits to registered sex offenders who want to move in. The 42 who already live in the suburban community, just east of Trenton, will not be affected, though they are being monitored, Mayor Glen D. Gilmore said.

The Township Council approved the ordinance, 5-0, after a brief hearing. Gilmore and Council President Wayne P. DeAngelo then signed the ordinance, making it effective immediately.

Hamilton is where 7-year-old Megan Kanka was raped and murdered by a twice-convicted sex offender in 1994. Her case inspired the creation of sex-offender registries across the country.
