I also find it frustrating to see people voting against their own interests, so I know how you feel. It's a constant struggle not to give into the freeperish attitude of "fuck 'em." When you live in a place that's full of poor people but still went to Bush by more than a 2:1 margin, as I do, it's hard not to gloat at news stories like this one.

But, as I've pointed out several times in this thread, it's wrong. The poorest people in Alabama are Democrats and they voted for Kerry. My mother and father in Alabama voted proudly for Kerry. There's a lot of Democrats in "red states" like Alabama, and writing them off simply so that we can have the pleasure of saying "I told you so" is contrary to what we stand for as progressives and politically counterproductive besides. We need every vote we can get, and dismissing fellow Democrats simply because they live in states where they're in the minority is just dumb.
