58. All of "them"? Bush got 100% of "their" votes?

That's amazing!

Or could it be that the poorest people in Alabama, and quite a few others, did in fact vote for Kerry, even though he made no effort whatsoever in that state? Now I know that logic and facts are no longer very welcome at DU and that broad-brush denunciations and endless repetition of conventional wisdom are what now count as shrewd political analysis here, but let's take a look at that electoral map:

http://uselectionatlas.org/USPRESIDENT/state.php?year=2004&fips=1&f=0

See that band of Democratic counties running from one side of the state to the other? That's the "Black Belt," where the poorest Alabamians live. Golly, it looks like "their" parents didn't all vote for Bush after all.

And then, if we really want to get into those nasty, useless facts, we can consider that despite the GOP's popularity in Alabama, we still hold both houses of the state legislature there. This would tend to indicate that quite a few people in Alabama are voting Democratic at least sometimes. That raises the question of why people like state and local Democrats a lot but don't have much use for the national candidates. Unfortunately, getting into why that is so might be complicated and even a bit uncomfortable, so let's just continue to write off the whole place as a bunch of rubes and lunatics. It's easier that way and also gives us another opportunity to strut and preen and declare our wondrous superiority to someone, which is always fun.
