By dismissing the regional stereotype like that, he turned people's attention to the real problem of censorship (much broader than particular states, as we're seeing). And I suspect he also tweaked the audience's interest -- "There's more controversial stuff in the book than naked pictures? Let's check it out!"


I'll bet he included that section on purpose, in the hopes something like this would happen.
