(2,657 posts)Most of us Biden voters don't have a problem with either Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren's ideas. We all want better healthcare. We all want more affordable college. The thing is, you have to get elected first to do any of that. So, let's look at which Democrats actually get elected.
Starting with Eisenhower in 1952, the only Democrats to ever get elected to the Presidency have been Moderates. Let's check each of those Moderates out of for a moment.
1960. JFK ran as an anti-Communist and a war hero who wanted to get the economy moving. Nothing for Republicans to hate there.
1964. LBJ beat Goldwater by appearing tougher on Communists. Many believe he escalated the Vietnam War for this very purpose.
1976. Jimmy Carter won both because Nixon was a crook and because of the high inflation during Ford's Time in office. Jimmy Carter ran as the church-going, peanut farm owning businessman and family man who manned a nuclear submarine during WWII. Again, nothing for Republicans to hate.
1992. Bill Clinton ran as the great triangulator New Democrat who was tough on crime. He also ran on the Republican idea of Free Trade. Nothing for Republicans to hate there. Being from the South also helped him to win both Southern White and Southern Black voters. Being strong in the South and with African American voters is an important ingredient in Democratic Presidential Wins
1996. Bill Clinton signed NAFTA, which Republicans liked, and got the economy moving, which everyone liked.
2008. After Republicans tanked the economy, Barack Obama promised to restore the economy, something that Republicans could get behind.
2012. Barack Obama won reelection 2012 on the strength of the improved economy, something that everyone could get behind.
What does every one of these Democrats who won the Presidency have in common? None of them were scary Liberals, Socialists, Communists, or Leftists. They were people that not just Democrats could get behind, but that lots of Independents could get behind also.
The last time someone anywhere close to as far left as Bernie Sanders got the nomination and ran for President was George McGovern, and he got slaughtered. The trick is to run a Moderate, so as not to scare people, then get lots of liberal things done after you win. So, what are just some of the things that these Moderates did?
JFK: In 3 years, JFK began the race to the moon and successfully dealt with the Cuban Missle Crisis, getting rid of Cuba's missiles without blowing up the world.
LBJ: Probably messed up with his Vietnam escalation, but signed the Voting Rights Act and other Civil Rights Legislation. Also, he started the war on poverty.
Jimmy Carter: Brought down the high inflation in America. Created the Windfall Profits Tax on oil company profits. His people negotiated the release of the Iran hostages, although to embarrass Carter, Iran waited until Reagan's Inauguration to actually release them.
Bill Clinton: Created tens of millions of jobs, closed military bases, and ended his Presidency with a balanced budget
Barack Obama: Recovered America from the Great Recession, created Obamacare, created the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
There are two parts to any Presidency:
1) What you do to get elected.
2)What you do after you are elected.
The best presidents tend to underpromise during the campaign and overdeliver while in office.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
