You seem to be conflating 2 different things, personal preferences and aggregate preferences. The "Biden is most popular thus the best" isn't a good argument to make on his behalf as it's actually a logical fallacy (argumentum ad populum). The entire point of the primaries is to get voters like you and me the chance to express our opinions and not simply steamroll to a predetermined conclusion that "yep, let's run Joe." I won't be upset if he wins or not vote for him in the general, but it still doesn't mean he's my preferred choice. And while Joe has a plurality lead in nationwide polling right now that doesn't mean that lead will prove durable once the voting begins.
