What a sh*tshow. The phrases do not even sound too similar. That said, also shows why candidates' communications directors should perhaps check with the candidate directly before defending/or offering interpretation of quote that is taking heat for being controversial (I've seen a ton of other candidates who were misquoted have their teams do this too, though I will say that it's a very difficult thing to deal with in the era of rapid response).
