Democrats worked with Bush after republicans impeached Clinton. Clinton had even found some common ground with that spiteful bunch of republicans. Before that, Tip O'Neill and Reagan trumpeted their abilities to work together.
What it came down to was throwing poor people under the bus. Getting tough on crime and dismantling the social safety net. Workfare under Reagan, "ending welfare as we know it" under Clinton.
Obama did his best to find some bipartisan cooperation by taking steps in the conservatives direction on further damaging social programs to no avail.
The take away for me is to wonder exactly what Joe means. Did we just not go far enough to the right when it came to damaging the lives of poor people, as working class people bought into the lie of their privilege with the belief that they are morally superior because they have a job?
