(45,984 posts)King Henry II was Richard the Lionheart's father, not not brother. Richard's brother and successor to the throne was King John; the part of Prince John in the 1938 movie is played by Calude Rains. Of course, Richard is also among the scheming sons of King Henry (Peter O'Toole) and Queen Eleanor (Katherine Hepburn) in The Lion in Winter, as is Prince John and the middle brother, Prince Geoffrey, who outlived his father but was killed in a jounting tournament during Richard's rein as King.
Richard spent very little time in England as King, but the reason for this is that he just couldn't stand the place. Even when he wasn't on Crusade, he preferred to spend his time in his lands in France, where he was the Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Anjou, among other titles. Thus, the King of England was a vassal to the King of France and actually controlled more land in France than that country's King. The all ending under King John, who was one of the most inept monarchs of the day and succeeding losing all of the English King's lands in France.
While Richard may have been a lousy King, like his brother, be was an excellent soldier and didn't need any convincing to lead the Second Crusade.
