...there was no daunting topic nor boring burdensome subject that I despised more than History. Nothing in my life has changed so much. Learning about and passing on useful and fascinating parts of History is now one of most favored hobbies.
I would hope that some of things I share would inspire others (hopeful at a younger age than when I began) to gain an appreciation for History as well.
There is a story about a preacher, speaker and politician who was the nation's most favored orator of the day. His name was Edward Everett. He was the keynote speaker at the dedication of a national monument. A great crowd came and stood listening to him on a chilly November day. He spoke for a few hours and keenly held the interest of the crowd. Also speaking that day was the President. Lincoln spoke for only a few minutes and afterwards thought insecurely that his speech had been a failure. He wrote to Mr. Everett and expressed his doubts. Everett's reply was, "I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes." Lincoln's reply was short and to the point, "In our respective parts yesterday, you could not have been excused to make a short address, nor I a long one. I am pleased to know that, in your judgment, the little I did say was not entirely a failure." Lincoln's speech is now known as the Gettysburg Address.
I know he was a Republican but I recommend the movie Lincoln.
