Are Mormons told to follow their "prophets" no matter what? Yes.

...they are told that the new prophecies are the ones they should follow. Because the new prophet has received different instructions from God. Not that the earlier prophets were wrong, they just had a different interpretation of God's word... er, I mean, God corrected his earlier statements... uh, God didn't correct himself, because God is never wrong, He just, um, clarified, yeah that's it, God clarified what he told the prophets many years ago.

Here's something else interesting. The leaders of the LDS church have instructed members that they are NOT to go searching for the golden tablets that Joseph Smith claimed to have translated that led to the Book of Mormon and the LDS church. I wonder why that is...
