(59,500 posts)He ran in 1984 after Tsongus, a personal friend, gave him a head's up that he was not running. He did not run against an incumbent. (Tsongus ran and won the seat Kerry lost in 1972 in 1974 with the help of all the records the Kerry campaign saved - he had called Kerry to see if he were running again because he did not want to run against him. Kerry decided to go to law school instead. He returned the favor when he opted not to run in 1984.)
If you mean SOS, you do not run for that. HRC has spoken for at least 2 years that she is leaving. As to lobbying for the position Rice and her allies did; Kerry did NOT.
I have no problem with Booker running for the Senate seat, but it might have been nice to allow Lautenberg to announce he is not (or is) running first. I have seen Lautenberg at Democratic functions in the state he is personal and very very sharp. His vision comes from also being a son of immigrants immigrants who worked in Patterson's silk factories which destroyed their health. Laughtenberg fought in WWI and got an education at his dad's insistence on the GI bill. Lautenberg was great telling these stories and was very personable.
I have never seen Menendez even though I phonebanked for him in 2 elections. He WAS helped by the turnout for Obamand the fact his opponent was unknown. I met noone even in Dover - who was super enthusiastic about Menendez.
