1. I think if we don't like what they do to their citizens we should focus more on them not less.

We should not meddle in their business deals with other countries. Unless they are being taken advantage of by other countries, like russia selling their old military crap to syria so they can kill more citizens. Or people doing business with the drug cartels.

I disagee with you, Syria does seem much like the "media reported turmoil, unrest and near collapse" Millions have left and millions remain and all they want is a normal life. Their kids to go to school and not live in fear. Human rights matter, it's not something anyone should turn their back on.
