2016 will in all likelihood be a "clean slate" for both parties, that is, the candidates will probably be people who have never run for President before. The historical precedent is against the Democrats, both for 2016 and 2014, so yes, they need to start planning for the post-Obama era, as well as for the next mid-term elections.
