The attacks on her started because she didn't play the traditional First Lady role when her husband was Governor and then President. She's a strong, ambitious woman in what is still a man's world, and the right wing, especially the evangelicals, see this as proof she is "evil". Women should be submissive. They've spent decades lying about her because she had the gall to be a very strong, and admired woman.
