Among other things, they made it very clear that they were on white people's side, that they weren't going to be aggressive on racial issues - and of course they weren't. They committed to mass incarceration of black people and they "reformed" welfare. And they were very successful; giving them and their allies control over the Democratic party. In such a context it's not surprising that Sanders hasn't been able to move the needle very much.
This year is different though; the liberal elements of the party are waking up and challenging the status quo - I gather you think it would be better if Hillary Clinton had been able to run unopposed, given your complete disdain for Sanders and his supporters, but if she sounds like a liberal right now it's only because she's had to face a principled opponent who is arguing for actual left wing policies, instead of the watered down liberalism of the Clintons.
