Humanity's ultimate survival relies on spreading out from this one rather wet rock. One big dino-killer and we are all gone. If we start populating other planets, moons, our chances of survival for the long term are that much better.

PLus, the more we invest in science, technology, the easier solutions will come around, especially if they are problems we created with dirtier, less sophisticated technologies.
