Did it involve a wormhole? I've read about the highly-speculative idea of stretching a wormhole at high speed (for time dilation) and then circling it around to allow time travel forward or backward in time.

I also have a vague memory of reading why traveling back in time was probably impossible, at least above the quantum level. It was mathematical and involved violation of causality, with a bullet killing someone even before the shooter pulled the trigger.
