...in reading this paper, I reflected a bit on water, which appears in some of the diagrams and in some of the text. Syn gas is CO and hydrogen, and without water, coal cannot be used to produce significant quantities of water.

So it's actually an interesting point. As the process flow sheet shows, the source of water is steam injection.

They are a little vague about the source of steam in gasification step, referring only to heating it in a steam generator drive by hot syn gas.

An Allam cycle based on biomass would very much involve water, and when I consider biomass gasification, I often consider wet sewage sludge or seawater raised to supercritical water temperatures (which separates the salt in a separate phase).
