In reply to the discussion: Remembering Arnulfo Crispin and Officer Scotty Richardson [View all]
A National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund preliminary report said that in 2011, 62 law enforcement deaths are attributed to firearms, 60 deaths are attributed to traffic-related instances and 44 are attributed to other causes. This likely will not be the final tally. The full statistical report will be released December 28.
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_police_officers_are_employed_in_the_United_states
There are as of 2006, 683,396 full time state, city, university and college, metropolitan and non-metropolitan county, and other law enforcement officers in the United States. There are approx. 120,000 full time law enforcement personnel working for the federal government adding up to a total number of 800,000 law enforcement personnel in the U.S.
From the link in the OP, gunfire deaths are up 15% and auto related deaths are down 18%.
Each death is a tragedy, but the total change is statistically insignificant. I'm no great hand with statistics, but saying "up 14%" seems like a bunch of hyperbole.
