Historically, the civilian population takes up the arms style and action the military had in the LAST war, then modifies that arm with bells & whistles. The big change in this dynamic is the military's advance to full-auto, while the civilian population had reached stasis with WW II (and earlier) technologies: Semi-auto fire.

If I were a couple of decades younger, I would probably choose an AR 15 "lower" and 2 "uppers:" One for using relatively inexpensive .223 ammo, one for larger & more powerful rounds for big-game hunting. Screw the fear & machismo crap, I'll take economy and flexibility any day.
