I've had this experience with both a dog and a cat and know how heartbreaking it is. I'm so sorry to hear about your sweetie. I've found that unless a storm or something scares them off (as happened to my dog), that males are more likely to go off on adventures. I've got a friend who lives in the country and has to also add coyotes to her list of pet concerns.

I've considered getting one of those gps tracking collars for my pets, but haven't done it for some reason.
Something about that just doesn't sit right with me....
