They collected some data. Then they worked with models until they found one that fit all of that data. One salient piece of data that they included in their criteria was that the towers collapsed. So they worked to find a model that would fit all the other data and the one most important data point of the towers collapsing.

I'm an actuary so I'm very familiar with the process of working backwards to find a set of assumptions and algorithms that produce an answer that you like. Actuaries do it all the time. That they could find such a model was a given before they even tried and it proves nothing.
