2. ROI is a bad way to look at things like this, IMO

Of course window coatings are going to have a high ROI over other home improvement projects; the window coatings themselves aren't all that expensive compared to the thousands of dollars needed to replace an old furnace or put in extra insulation. The flip side of that is that a high ROI on a cheap investment means you aren't saving all that much money because you didn't invest that much money into it in the first place.
