This documentary tells the story of how the health care systems of Canada and the United States developed and how they affect the well-being of people in their respective countries. It was produced by Laurie Simons and Terry Sherrenberg and it is narrated by Kiefer Sutherland.
In the United States each year 45,000 people die and over 750,000 go bankrupt due to
non-existent or inadequate health care coverage. In Canada everyone has access to health care when they need it and at a cost they can afford, so that Canadians live longer than Americans and no one goes bankrupt because of medical bills. Through interviews with over 300 Canadians and visits with persons and families treated for serious medical conditions, it becomes apparent that the overwhelming majority of Canadians supports their national health care system and benefits greatly from it.
The movie exposes the on-going public relations campaigns in the United States mounted by the American Medical Association, the health insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies. These campaigns have instilled a fear of government intervention and have dissuaded the American public from supporting a system that would provide health care for all, even though over 51 million uninsured Americans cannot afford health care. While the United States has enacted the federal Affordable Care Act over intense public opposition, even this law will not control costs or provide health care for all.
The Healthcare Movie provides hope and valuable information for those of us working for a just and comprehensive health care system. It documents the intense political struggle in Canada that led to their single payer system At first the medical profession vehemently opposed national health care, but today the vast majority of doctors support it. With persistence and tenacity, we in the United States can win the single payer health care system we need deserve.
