At the time I was there, I believe it was noted as one of two seaworthy Liberty Ship remaining. I don't recall exactly when I was there, but I'd guess it was in the early 90s. I was very interested in the radio room and the generators. A former Liberty Ship Merchant Mariner on board let me get a closer look at these areas. We discussed the homemade amplifier for the HF transmitter and the difficulties of paralleling DC generators under load. He convinced me to come back and wield a paint brush.
It was hard and dangerous work sailing those ships in WWII.
