And, I think, an inspiration for the Marx Brothers.
The famous stateroom scene in "Night at the Opera" was probably loosely based on an actual avante-garde "performance" in Paris in the teens or 20's when the audience was instructed to show up at a certain location, each with a suitcase. Well the location happened to be a rather small room. It was probably much like the movie, except I doubt anyone got paid.
Satie's "instructions" in his scores were also hilarious. Completely non-sequitur but occasionally deep.
Sometimes I get psychic relief by conjecturing that Trump is just a botched reincarnation of Erik Satie.
