I spent 9 hours in I.C.U. yesterday. Prognosis is probably good but needs more follow-up. [View all]

Two weeks ago, I fell, tripping on a root during a hike. Days on, headache, that kept getting stronger by the day. Yesterday, It was accompanied by a feeling like I had flu -- probably dehydration. I went to the walk-in clinic that I have used for 20 years.

Dr. "I've known you for years and I've never seen you look like this. I can't let you drive home. I will call an ambulance or can you get somebody to drive you to E.R.?"

My stepdaughter drove me and friends picked up my car. My ex stayed with me for 8 of the 9 hours. (We still live in the same house and get along quite well).

Anyway, cat scan found a growth in my brain. 1/16". It is likely benign and not uncommon. It is that, or a brain bleed from the fall.

I'm 81 and have never been admitted to hospital... probably never had more than 10 sick days in my life. My family lived to their 90's. I expect to make it to over 100.

But still, it rattled me.

I consider my life to be pretty much wasted. Every job I had, I fucked up, one way or another. Fatherhood was fucked up. Nobody was abused or neglected but still, I could have done much better.

I'm not sure where I am going with this... just "free associating."

So off to bed.
