At what age should we stop adopting pets? [View all]
For me, this is a very serious question. Yesterday, I buried my beloved furbaby, Phoebe, aged 14 yrs and 6 mths. I told my spouse that was it. No more! I've had my heart ripped from my chest for the last time.
This morning, I found myself searching the local pet shelter websites to see what was available for adoption. I can't remember a time when I never had a beloved pet. Be it a rabbit, hamster, tank of fish or many kittens and an occasional dog. I will soon be 70 years old. I have no children, niece/nephews, cousins, etc...that would step up should a new baby out live me. So in my head I've told myself that it wouldn't be fair to another beloved as who would care for it when I'm gone? I've had a few cats go beyond 20!
My heart says get a pair of young cats and love them till I'm gone...I might have an estate that could also be given to a new parent should they take them over.
I'm torn...what do you all think? Any others in my position or are going thru this self imposed alienation of pet affection?
