In reply to the discussion: Anybody else never particularly charmed with Mickey Mouse? [View all]Wednesdays
(17,344 posts)38. If you watch the old Mickey Mouse
That is, the OLD old Mickey Mouse from ca. 1928-1930, you can get an idea of his appeal (even if you don't particularly like the kind of humor). They used a lot of sight gags and animated quirks which audiences at the time found hilarious. Also, Mickey was a sly, mischievous character very different from what you see today.
As the 1930's progressed, Mickey's character became more conservative and sophisticated, and he lost his appeal. Mickey faded in favor of more interesting characters like Donald and Goofy. His "new look" in The Sorcerer's Apprentice in 1940 was supposed to have been "Mickey's comeback," but even then he did very little more than fill in as a straight man for most of the rest of his career.

I loved how Donald was always angry, I found the other Disney ducks boring and dismal.

Agreed. I actually like Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck better. Also Roadrunner and the coyote.
