6. Ember, my cat, used to hide just

around the corner of a piece of furniture and take swipes at the vacuum cleaner when it rolled past her.

One day in the bathroom, she swatted my hair dryer just as I was turning it off. She must have felt empowered by that, as if she had caused it to go off. Soon afterward, I brought out the vacuum and she boldly strolled up to it and walloped it. She was just a year old then.

Now she's 5 years old and sprawls on the back of the couch or perches on a bookcase and calmly watches it go by.
