So much detail, especially the conscious decisions to do certain things.

The reason I say this is because, personally, I do a lot of crazy stuff in my dreams, but I never question them at the time, at least not until I wake up anyway.

Gene Hackman to me represents that character in the French Connection that had to battle incredible odds to bring down a drug lord, and maybe subconsciously, you feel the same way.

Anyway, that's my take on it.
