(9,638 posts)7. For me, black licorice brings back memories of my dad.
The black button licorice was his favorite treat, but got hard to find. I used to drive an hour away to get them for him at a little candy shop in the mountains.
When he was in a nursing home and dying of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, that was one of the last gifts I could bring him that brought him a little bit of joy. He vision and hearing were nearly gone, but he could still taste that licorice, his childhood favorite.

What is called and sold as Black Licorice in the United States is not what in Europe we call Lakritz

I like black licorice because I like Sambuca and or Anisette .. and much better.
