he was at peace and your heart is broken to lose him. You did what was best for him and you were brave for him. That memory will fade and in time you will talk to friends about him again - the fun and funny stuff. It will just take time. Let yourself grieve - they lived in our hearts and that is a big loss. Later, your memories though will be the good times.
