3. At least 1 version teaches setting low goals, expectations

In that one the country mouse is envious but after being chased by a cat in town decides to stay at home and be content with the simple life.

One could claim the moral of that version is that the lower classes shouldn't desire to rise above their station.

It's a bit of fun to examine various kid stories and try to figure out why that particular tale was told at that particular time.
