(43,531 posts)and I recall Mom emphasizing William L. Shirer's 1960 classic work on the Third Reich.
Another historical event in 1960 that I remember was the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina, the major Nazi war criminal and chief SS officer in charge of transporting Jews and Roma to concentration camps per The Final Solution. Eichmann was taken by Israeli agents to Israel for trial and conviction which was televised. ~ These historical influences and Anne Frank's diary formed my first knowledge of the Nazis & the Second World War.
- William L. Shirer witnessed a 1934 Nazi rally in Nuremberg & linked the criminality of individuals to communal frenzy.
SI Excerpt: But in 1960, there were two notable developments, two captures: In May, Israeli agents apprehended Adolf Eichmann in Argentina and flew him to Jerusalem for trial. And in October, William L. Shirer captured something else, both massive and elusive, within the four corners of a book: The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. He captured it in a way that made amnesia no longer an option. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/revisiting-the-rise-and-fall-of-the-third-reich-20231221/

The Adolf Eichmann Trial in Jerusalem 1961. Eichmann testified from a bullet proof glass booth, was convicted of war crimes in May 1961 and executed by hanging in 1962.
Eichmann Trial: After World War II, Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann fled from Austria and made his way to Argentina where he lived under the name Ricardo Klement. In May 1960, Israeli Security Service agents seized Eichmann in Argentina and took him to Jerusalem for trial in an Israeli court. Eichmann testified from a bulletproof glass booth.
The Eichmann trial aroused international interest, bringing Nazi atrocities to the forefront of world news. Testimonies of Holocaust survivors, especially those of ghetto fighters such as Zivia Lubetkin, generated interest in Jewish resistance. The trial prompted a new openness in Israel; many Holocaust survivors felt able to share their experiences as the country confronted this traumatic chapter.
Israeli attorney general Gideon Hausner signed a bill of indictment against Eichmann on 15 counts, including crimes against the Jewish people and crimes against humanity
