(8,200 posts)William L. Shirer was a journalist in Germany during the rise of Hitler and he provides detailed descriptions of just how Hitler came to power. It is a long read, but well worth it. During my college years it was a required read in many history classes. What is striking is the same denigration of the Free Press, scapegoating of minorities, threats of violence, denigration of opposing parties, etc. The parallels are sobering. The Fourth Estate has placed itself in jeopardy just as it did in Germany when it failed to challenge the Nazi's propaganda. The false equivalency of opposing sides is only tolerated because of the lack of fortitude of journalists and the desire of managers not to alienate advertisers and lose readership. What they are afraid to protect is in jeopardy of their losing it.
