6. Two years

of chemo for a rare Non Hodgkin lymphoma (Mantle Cell Lymphoma, see lls.org for more info.) When I was diagnosed I was given two-three years. So I went twice a month two days in a row for chemo for eighteen months. Then twice a month for the last six months of treatment. Now I join about 10% of those that have made it 11 months of remission. Stay strong and never give up. It will however put you in the poorhouse with monthly flushes for my port, blood draws, two doctors a month, three doctors every other month. Co pays, medicine and deductibles take 40% of our fixed income. An income less than 20k. We receive $32 a month too much for extra help like SNAP, medicaid or extra help with prescriptions. Then there is the wait every month for the blood work results.
The insurance company worked out a plan to pay the hospital 24k a treatment, rather than the 33k the hospital was asking. Over 2 million in chemo alone. Thanks to the ACA they couldn't cut me off because of some arbitrary "lifetime limit." To anyone that experiences this, stay strong, be optimistic, and never let them tell you the statistics. I told them I was going to prove them wrong. It's not over, MCL is chronic, but I bought a few extra months to brag about how much of a freak of nature I am. Oh, and keep a sense of humor!
