1. #1 reason: NO LEADERSHIP standing up to resist it.

"Let's meet them halfway! Our opponents are honorable men and women who love their country just as much as we do - maybe they have a point! We're open to good ideas no matter which side of the aisle they come from."

One side of the aisle has had nothing but stupid, brutal and vicious ideas - if you can even call them ideas- since Nixon at least, which have become more stupid and vicious with every episode of appeasement, and with every passing year. The other side of the aisle has the spine of jellyfish, and has, at last, totally forgotten what its own ideas are or rather what they were, and that they were once expected to have their own unique set.
