One way of interpreting that headline number is that white Americans overall are just as likely to be Republicans (58%) as are white people in Mormon Utah (59%) or Montana (58%). In other words, far from being ultraconservative, those states are representative of white America as a whole. Meanwhile, the only really liberal/progressive parts of white America, as the map above shows, are New England, Colorado, the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii.

Itís perhaps not surprising that the most reactionary part of white America is the Deep South (Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama). But other findings ó behind the depressing headline number ó are indeed surprising. For instance, two states that are considered bastions of liberalism ó New York and California ó are only that way because of their diversity; white New Yorkers gave their native son Trump a majority of their votes (52%!) and white Californians came pretty damn close (47%). Indeed, Trump came pretty close to winning a majority of whites even in Bidenís home state of Delaware (48%).
